Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Asuncion is pleased to offer three internships to support the work of the Embassy for a three-month period. Candidates should indicate which position(s) they would like to be considered for as part of their application.

Policy and Programmes Intern: The successful candidate will support the Head of Policy and Programmes and will collaborate with the wider team with their activities to promote the UK as a key partner for Paraguay. The intern will assist with the day-to-day running of the team, liaise with stakeholders in the programmes portfolio, support internal political reporting, and assist in the organisation of activities hosted or supported by the Embassy.

Trade Intern: The successful candidate will support the Department for
Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST) to lead on economic growth - the number one priority for both the Embassy and the UK Government. The intern will conduct market research for UK companies, assist in responding to enquiries for British companies looking to do business in Paraguay, and provide support for other Embassy teams as required.

Corporate Services and Events Intern: The successful candidate will work primarily with the Corporate Services Team assisting them by liaising with UK and local contractors and vendors, making payments, and acting as a trusted and professional first point of contact for enquiries coming into the Embassy's reception. The intern will also assist other teams in the Embassy as needed providing support for events throughout the year.

All three positions are an excellent opportunity to learn about foreign policy and international relations, building skills, confidence and networks. Working alongside British diplomats and locally engaged staff of different Embassy teams, the successful candidate will obtain relevant experience and prepare for work in different environments in the future.

Roles and responsibilities:
  1. Tech Expertise, Reporting and Delivering UK-India Collaboration (35%): You will be sector lead for a number of priority tech sectors and lead on reporting developments on these sectors back to to UK Government policymakers and colleagues across the BHC network. You will also lead on scoping opporutnities collaboration in these sectors to contribute to the delivery of the UK's forward looking and ambitious R&I relationship.
  2. Strategic Relationship Management (25%): You will build a network of influential tech and digital stakeholders in India in business, state governments and institutions. You will support senior official engagement with senior leaders and interlocutors. You will use your organisational skills to maintain a variety of strategic engagement tools and respond in a timely manner to queries.
  3. Programme Management (20%): You will formulate ideas for and deliver small seed funded programmes to create and nurture a pipeline of cutting edge innovations. Alongside drawing on project management skills to make sure the programme runs smoothly, to time and budget, you'll manage relevant in-country events and provide strategic guidance to keep activities aligned with UK Government policy objectives.
  4. Visits and High Level Meetings (15%): You'll play a key role in supporting visits and engagements between Ministers and senior Government officials leading on tech in the UK and India; helping shape and deliver programmes, site visits, announcements and associated communications to a global audience.
  5. Communications (5%): You will work closely with comms teams and relevant teams across UK Government.

Policy and Programmes Intern (80%):
  • Monitor daily news and draft summary reports on local political developments.
  • Conduct research on political topics, events and stakeholder interactions.
  • Draft briefings and biographies for high-level visits and engagements.
  • Support logistical arrangements for official visits.
  • Maintain project documentation, including plans, reports, and meeting minutes.

Trade Intern (80%):
  • Assist Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade (BIST) with market research and responses to UK business enquiries.
  • Support the organisation of commercial events, trade delegations and official visits.
  • Conduct follow-up on commercial engagements and identified opportunities.
  • Prepare groundwork for long-term commercial initiatives.
  • Log interactions and maintain records in the internal CRM system.

Corporate Services and Events Intern (80%):
  • Coordinate with UK and local contractors providing services for the Embassy and diplomatic residences.
  • Run office errands (e.g. making payments to suppliers and delivering papers to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
  • Be a professional first point of contact on the Embassy's reception during working hours, directing queries to the appropriate team.
  • Support other embassy teams with the organization of externa and internal events throughout the year.

All interns (20%):
  • Provide ad hoc support to the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission, and other Embassy teams, as required by business need.
  • Provide logistical support for Embassy-hosted events and senior official visits, including accommodation, transport, catering, and equipment.
  • Maintain strong relationships with all suppliers, stakeholders, and corporate sponsors.
  • Assist with planning tools such as the Embassy Forward Look, Residence Events Planner and Staffing Rota.
  • Assist in receiving and sending diplomatic bags in line with security protocols.


Language: Expert / Spanish (native), English (C1 certified with IELTS or TOEFL)

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Essential on arrival:
  • Currently enrolled in the last semesters of university degree in a relevant area e.g. international relations, political science, economics, international trade, law, languages.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Works well against deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Responsible, committed to the internship.
  • Must have availability of at least 6 months before graduation date (to complete internship)
  • Availability to start their internship on the proposed date.


Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Desirable:
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of Microsoft CoPilot or similar AI tools
  • Knowledge and interest in global affairs
  • Experience in organising and delivering events
  • Experience in project support or project management
  • Experience in liaising with government offices, civil society organisations, companies or suppliers.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Paraguay in their own right at the time of application.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a 'reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

The internships should be completed on a part-time basis (20 hours net per week/ 4 hours net per day) from Monday to Friday. Interns are expected to work 2.5 days a week from the office in a flexible hybrid model.

Internships offered at the British Embassy are governed by the applicable Paraguay law. All interns are responsible for paying themselves any income tax required by the local law to the applicable Tax Office.

The successful candidate will be subject to the reference checks and the satisfactory completion of security clearance.

Visa / Passport requirements:

Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Paraguay and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
