Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Spanish Interpretation Section, Interpretation Service, Division of Conference Management, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management, Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Spanish Interpretation Section.

Responsibilities

Under the broad supervision of the Chief, Spanish Interpretation Section, the Senior Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties: • Services up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies. • Provides interpretation, as required, into Spanish of speeches or statements given in English and French. • Routinely assigned to sensitive meetings. • Routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. • Assists the Chief of Section or Service, as appropriate, in the screening, training and examining of prospective interpreters. • May be called upon to serves as Chief Interpreter on missions. • Is expected to be assigned as Officer in Charge of the Section and/or assume the role of Chief of Section at any time as requested. • May instruct and advise interpreter trainees. • Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need. • May perform other related duties as required.

Education

A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

The United Nations Competitive Examination for Spanish Interpreters is required for this position.

Work Experience

At least ten (10) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required. Out of these years, five (5) years of experience with the United Nations Common System or similar international organizations is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, a perfect command of Spanish, normally expected to be the incumbent's main language is required. Candidates must also possess an excellent command of English and French. Proven ability to interpret from or into other United Nations official languages is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
